MARINE CORPS SIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan - U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kyle Salyer, an aircraft ordnance technician with Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 242, tightens an impulse cartridge (CCU-45B) at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Oct. 27, 2017. An aviation technician’s, also known as a maintainer, job is to secure the well-being of their pilots by ensuring the functionality of the F/A-18D. CCU-45B cartridges are used for releasing stores, or extra weight, on an aircraft and in ejection systems. When the cartridge is fired gas pressure moves a piston, which unlocks the connection to the store or ejection system, then releases the store or activates the ejection system.
