MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan -- Crime Prevention Month began Oct. 1 with the signing of the Crime Prevention Proclamation by Capt. Jacob E. Hoskins, provost marshal for MCAS Iwakuni. He signed the document at the Armed Forces Network studios here after reading it aloud for the afternoon broadcast.
The proclamation reads:
The vitality of MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, depends on how safe we keep our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces and our community because crime and fear diminish the quality of life for all.
Crime and fear of crime destroy our trust in others and in institutions, threatening the community's health and prosperity.
People of all ages must be made aware of what they can do to prevent themselves, their families, neighbors, and coworkers from being harmed by drugs, violence and other crime.
Personal injury, financial loss, and community deterioration resulting from crime are intolerable and require action by the whole community.
Crime prevention initiatives must include but go beyond self-protection and security to promote collaborative efforts to make neighborhoods safer for all ages and to develop positive educational and recreational opportunities for young people.
Adults must invest time, resources, and policy support in effective prevention. Intervention strategies for youth and teens must be engaged in driving crime from their communities.
Effective crime prevention programs excel because of partnership among law enforcement, other government agencies, civic groups, schools, faith communities, businesses and individuals as they help to nurture communal responsibilities and instill pride.
All citizens and activities aboard the Air Station are urged to recognize the power of prevention and work together for the common good.
During October, a rich array of activities will demonstrate crime prevention's power to mobilize citizens and promote community partnerships. A list of events for Crime Prevention Month 2013 is located at http://www.mcasiwakuni.marines.mil/News/NewsBrief.aspx.
