MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan -- Peace of mind can be as important for service members as any other training. With the effects of the daily grind stirring inside, a positive outlet is sometimes required.
The Arts and Crafts branch of the Marine Corps Community Services is aware of this and offers a variety of classes which allows service members and their families not only an upbeat way to channel emotions, but learn a new hobby as well.
According to Debbie Crone, Arts and Crafts manager, the classes given at the shop can present many opportunities to those involved.
"For many people new to the Station the classes can be a great icebreaker when meeting new people," she said. "Those attending class may also realize how much they have to learn by just being around other people who enjoy the same craft."
With classes ranging from oil painting, drawing, Japanese calligraphy, doll making, basket weaving and ceramics; the Arts and Crafts store appeals to the diversity aboard the Station.
For participants like Janelle Clark, the classes offer her a great chance to meet new people while she enjoys doing something she loves.
"The classes are a lot of fun, and it's great to just get out of the house sometimes," said Clark.
Crone added the arts and crafts are not intended for just adults.
"Our classes are open to individuals of all ages. We just want the community to know we are here for their benefit," she said.
