Outstanding students recognized at Samurai Scholars Awards Assembly

1 Dec 2006 | Pfc. Noah S. Leffler Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan

Matthew C. Perry Middle and High School students were commended for outstanding academic achievements during the first Samurai Scholars Awards Assembly at the high school gym Thursday.

The Samurai Scholars program, sponsored by M.C. Perry teachers Joann Sellers and Debra Marple, was designed to recognize and award exceptional scholastic performances. Students who received a 3.5 grade point average or higher and whose behavior had not warranted any formal disciplinary action were acknowledged for their hard work.

“Any time (the students) see they’re being awarded for something, I think it sparks an extrinsic motivation in them,” Sellers said.

For their efforts, the young achievers received an envelope containing a certificate and information about a Samurai Scholar field trip to the Hiroshima Peace Park. The students were also awarded a privilege card entitling the bearer to one free homework assignment and a once-a-week five minute extension on their lunch period.

Richard O. Naseer, M.C. Perry senior and Miami, Fla., native, was recognized for his $30,000 scholarship to the University of Dubuque and for his acceptance into four colleges. Naseer feels events such as the assembly show students that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

“I think it’s a good program,” said Naseer. “To show students that excel in their work, it’s encouraging.”
