Marines prepare for Foal Eagle with Penny Lake exercise

8 Dec 2006 | Pfc. Noah S. Leffler Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan

In preparation for the upcoming Korean deployment Exercise Foal Eagle, Marines coordinated a field training exercise at Penny Lake this week.

Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Aircraft Group 12, and members from the Okinawa-based 7th Communications Battalion and Marine Wing Communication Squadron 18 participated in the exercise.

The Marines set up weather and satellite equipment as well as circuits for telephone services and internet. They also constructed tents and facilities housing service members for the duration of the exercise.

By utilizing the same techniques and procedures used in Korea, the Marines are better equipped to tackle their duties in a more efficient manner while on deployment.

“It gives us a chance to work out some of the kinks so we can run things a little more smoothly over there,” said Sgt. Aaron C. Eastman, MWSS-171 tactical network system specialist and Luray, Va., native.

This week’s rain and chilly temperatures added to the realism of the simulation and gave Marines a taste of what they will experience in Korea.

Being outdoors during the cold nights was a bit uncomfortable, but it was important for everyone to stay on top of their job and make sure everything was secure and running well, said Cpl. Andrew W. Anderson, MWSS-171 organizational automotive mechanic and Ellsworth, Kan., native.

Despite the rough weather, the Marines pulled together to accomplish their mission.

“It’s going by smoothly, and it’s good practice for everyone who will be out there,” Anderson added.
