Not a silent night: Community tunes into Holiday Extravaganza

15 Dec 2006 | Lance Cpl. Cindy G. Alejandrez Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan

Station residents filled the Sakura Theater to enjoy holiday melodies and celebrate Christmas around the world during the Holiday Extravaganza Dec. 9. Maj. Matthew D. Razvillas, Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 executive officer and native of Camp Hill, Pa., produced the program which included carols, a poem, an art show and information about how the holiday season is celebrated worldwide. The talents of the Matthew C. Perry School band and choir and several station residents were showcased during the show.“It was very well received by the audience and I believe the student gave a very good performance,” said James O. Hashman, M.C. Perry’s director of music and native of Seattle. “I think the night went very, very well.”Hard work and a lot of practice helped the students perform several songs to the utmost perfection. “Practice was about dedication, and they (students) showed they had it,” said Seaman Cedna V. Eugene, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron boatswain’s mate and native of Miami, who performed the National Anthem. One of the night’s favorite songs was the solo “Ave Maria,” performed by Lance Cpl. Matthew G. Griep, Marine Aircraft Group 12 operations clerk and native of Milwaukee.“He just has an awesome voice,” said Silvia R. Hudson native of New Bern, N.C., who performed a jazzy version of “Let it Snow.” Hudson said Griep’s song brought back memories of her mother who also sang it beautifully. Musical performers weren’t the only ones who made for a spirited night. According to Hashman, this year’s Holiday Extravaganza ran smoothly because of the great volunteer turnout. More community members helped with backstage details such as lighting and sound.“This is a great way to meet people,” said Hudson. “That’s what I love about these events, they bring the community together. I just want to encourage everyone to come out next year when we kick-off the third (Holiday Extravaganza).”
