Ridin' the waves

6 Sep 2002 | Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan

Iwakuni residents now have another way to beat the summer heat.

Marine Corps Community Services recently purchased three new jet skis and are renting them to all qualified service members, family members and Department of Defense civilians.

Before getting in the water and hitting the waves however, all riders must attend a safety brief.

"People are given the safety brief the same day and it only takes about 15 minutes," said Bobby Dillard, Outdoor Recreation director.  "We want to make sure that everyone understands the different rules that apply to them while they're out in the harbor."

Those who rent the jet skis may feel a little more at ease out the water knowing that assistance is not far away if they need it, noted Dillard.

"We watch all the riders from the dock and we have a safety boat in the harbor just in case there's an accident," said Dillard.

The rental fee for the jet skis is $30 for half an hour or $50 for an hour.  All riders must be able to prove that they are capable of handling the jet ski if they wish to ride alone.

"Riders have to be at least 12 years old and have an adult with them to operate the crafts," said Dillard, "and they have to show that they can handle it."

Those interested in renting the jet skis can do so at the Marina located on the Japanese side of the Station.  The jet skis are only available Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and rental times for this weekend will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday-Monday.

Renters are reminded however, that the consumption of alcohol by the operator is prohibited during or before the use of the jet skis.
