Focusing the chi

Residents aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni have the opportunity to relax both mind and body courtesy of Tai Chi classes offered at the Main Gym every Tuesday and Saturday from 8:30-10 a.m.

Tai Chi consists of a series of different stances and movements, which enhance not only a student's state of health, but awareness as well.

The ancient Chinese internal art offers participants a variety of benefits, according to Catherine Gigliotti, Tai Chi instructor.

"Studies have proven that Tai Chi can help people stay in shape and it can ease health problems like arthritis," said Gigliotti.

The classes at the Main Gym are available to anyone willing to give it a try, regardless of whether they're familiar with the art of Tai Chi or not.

"Anyone can do Tai Chi," said Gigliotti.  "It's something that young and old alike can get into and really benefit from."

One of the main goals of Tai Chi is to help students relax themselves by focusing on their breathing and mental state to redirect their energy, or chi.

"It's really a type of meditation," said Gigliotti.  "You're relaxed and energized at the same time.  Students have told me that after class they're ready to take on anything." Some students say that Tai Chi is just what they need to start off the day.

"I've been practicing Tai Chi for seven years," said Marsha Sanger, Tai Chi class participant.  "It centers me both physically and mentally and benefits just about every aspect of my life.  I'm thrilled that there is someone here to teach this to us." 

However, to get in shape through Tai Chi, students don't necessarily have to be in the best physical condition when they begin, noted Gigliotti.

"Anyone can start Tai Chi at any time," said Gigilotti.  "It's not something that you have to be muscular and strong to do."
