MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan -- Marine Aviation Logistics Group 12 triathlon team took first place with a combined time of 91 minutes, 11 seconds in the Iwakuni Independence Indoor Triathlon at IronWorks Gym Friday.
The group of three officers competed against seven other units aboard the air station for a first place trophy and $100 towards their unit party fund.
Each unit has a fund that is used for events such as unit barbeques and family get-togethers.
The teams swam 200 meters, completed a five-mile distance on a stationary bicycle, and ran two miles on a treadmill, said Paula J. Kim, IronWorks Gym health promotions secretary and Las Vegas, native.
“It was a great work-out and right now I feel fantastic,” said Capt. Robert E. Flannery, MALS-12 operations officer and native of Hannover, Pa. “This is the result of regular training and real dedication.”
The second place team was Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron 171. Their combined time was 95 minutes, 10 seconds. They earned a second place trophy and $75 towards their unit party fund.
Each unit aboard the air station has a fund for unit events such as barbeques and family days.
The three-Marine teams were scored based on an average of their individual scores, said Kim.
The indoor triathlon is one of nine events put together by “The President’s Challenge”, an eight-month program created by the President’s Physical Fitness & Sports Council.
“Events such as the indoor triathlon are organized for active duty personnel to get involved in physical activity other than their regular unit training,” said Kim.
The next President’s Challenge event is Water Polo Unit PT at IronWorks Gym indoor pool. The event is schedule for August 17 and participants must sign up no later than the day before the event.
