Students from Matthew C. Perry School District attended the Back to School Bash at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Aug. 26, 2016.

This school year will mark the last first day of school for students at the old M.C. Perry buildings.

“The event allowed new students to interact with other students, start new friendships and celebrate the end of the summer,” said Johanna Gilbert, high school Parent Teacher Organization president.

Elementary school students enjoyed concessions and games, posed for photos with McGruff, the Provost Marshal’s Office’s mascot, toured a fire truck and PMO police cruiser before receiving their new teacher assignments and touring the school.

“I’m enjoying today and am excited to go back to school,” said Laila Swafford, sixth grader at M.C. Perry elementary. “I am looking forward to meeting my new teachers.”

The high school students participated in activities such as the wacky tourist, mega twister, dizzy izzy, the frozen t-shirt challenge, a hula hoop relay, pass the water and a water balloon fight.

“During this bash, we ran around and had a lot of water and paint poured on us,” said Heather Diaz, 10th grader. “I enjoyed the paint and balloons the most because everyone got paint on them. I am looking forward to cheerleading, (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) and to be in the new school when it’s finished.”
