MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan -- Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni has announced that the air station will not hold an American Independence Day fireworks display this year. The air station traditionally holds an annual fireworks display on or about July 4 in celebration of American independence.
After much deliberation, station and tenant organization leadership has made this difficult decision. Independence Day is during our peak rainy season, historically the majority of celebrations have been postponed due to rain, including 2011 and several preceding years. This inconveniences attendees and creates logistical challenges impacting all aspects of our collective operations.
We are aware of how important this holiday is to all Americans and enjoyed by many of our Japanese hosts. We will celebrate, but this year without fireworks. The command is considering holding a fireworks display later in the year.
