Sgt. Maj. Richard Johnson

Sergeant Major Johnson assumed his current post as the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Sergeant Major on Aug 15, 2025. A native of Washington D.C., he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on April 25, 1999. He graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina, in July 1999 and reported to Infantry Training Battalion, Camp Geiger, NC then reported to School of Infantry and completed his training at Weapons Training Battalion where he earned the primary Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 0341, Mortarman. 

In October 1999, Sergeant Major Johnson reported to India Company, Weapons Platoon, 3d Battalion 3d Marines, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and served as a Mortarman. During this tour he participated in two Unit Deployment Programs (UDPs) and deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

In January 2004, Sergeant Major Johnson reported to Marine Corps Security Forces Instructors Course, Chesapeake, Virginia and later reported to 7th Fleet Yokosuka, Japan.  He served as an anti-terrorism level II and Auxiliary Security Force Instructor.
 
In December 2005 Sergeant Major Johnson reported to 81’s Weapons Company, 1st Battalion 8th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as section leader and Platoon Sergeant for the 24th MEU Commander’s Personal Security Detail during MEU/OIF. 

In May 2007 Sergeant Major Johnson reported to Recruiting School at MCRD San Diego. Upon graduation he was assigned to Recruiting Station Frederick, 4th Marine Corps District.
 
In June 2010 Sergeant Major Johnson was reassigned to, 2d Battalion 3d Marines Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. During this period, he served as Embedded Foreign Military Advisor to the 215th Afghan National Army (ANA), Golf Co Weapons Platoon Sergeant and Company Gunnery Sergeant in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR).

In February 2013, Sergeant Major Johnson reported to G-3 Operations, Marine Corps Forces Pacific, Camp Smith, Hawaii and served as Watch Chief, and Foreign Military Advisor.

In June 2015, Sergeant Major Johnson reported to Suicide Charley, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines where he deployed for Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF) attached to Task Force South-West and in direct support of the 501st Paratroopers, US Army during OIR and Operation Resolute Support (ORS) in Afghanistan, Jordan and Syria. 

In March 2018 Sergeant Major Johnson was assigned as Inspector Instructor Site First Sergeant for Det A, MWSS 473, MAG 41 at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California. 

In May 2021 Sergeant Major Johnson reported to Tango Battery, 5th Battalion 11th Marines Camp Pendleton, California and deployed in support of UDP 22.1 with 12th Marine Regiment Okinawa, Japan. In May 2022 upon selection to Sergeant Major he received orders to Combat Logistics Battalion 11, Combat Logistics Regiment 17, Camp Pendleton, California where he deployed in support of Koa Moana 23. 

In Jan 2024 Sergeant Major Johnson was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California.

Sergeant Major Johnson’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
