Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force members steer a utility boat toward a US-2 aircraft, both with Air Rescue Squadron 71, Fleet Air Wing 31, as a U.S. Air Force CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, assigned to 21st Special Operations Squadron, 353rd Special Operations Wing flies overhead during Rescue Flag 26-1, at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Aug. 26, 2026. Rescue Flag 26-1 gave U.S. Marines with Marine Aircraft Group 12 and Marine Aircraft Group 36 with 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the opportunity to work with U.S. Airmen and JMSDF personnel on coordinated rescue operations to simulate realistic scenarios of pilot recovery from a downed aircraft.
