MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan --

A Marine from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 was found deceased aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Saturday.

Captain Garrett R. Woodcock, 31, of Riverside, Calif., was found deceased in his barracks room May 31 at approximately 7 p.m. Woodcock was an intelligence officer for VMFA-122, which is based out of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C. VMFA-122 is temporarily located on MCAS Iwakuni as part of the Unit Deployment Program.

Started in 1977, the UDP allows stateside squadrons to rotate through MCAS Iwakuni on six-month intervals; these deployments enable squadrons to further deploy to various locations throughout the region in support of theater security exercises and activities with alliance partners and other nations.

Woodcock’s awards and personal decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

The incident is currently under investigation.
